About our newsroom
Nation in Shorts is a short-form news service with an India edition and a World edition. Every story is written to be read in under a minute as a card, with a full version for readers who want the detail.
How our newsroom works
Nation in Shorts is an AI-assisted, automated newsroom. Software watches official releases, public news feeds and search trends and lists the events worth covering. An AI writing system, working under the written rules on this page, researches each event from primary and independent sources and drafts the story.
No story is published straight from the writer. Every draft goes through an automatic publish gate that checks it before it can go live:
- Sources: at least two independent sources, or one official source such as a government release, regulator, court or company filing. Score 9 and 10 stories always need an official source.
- Fact check: the gate opens every cited source and confirms that each quoted passage and every number in the headline and summary appears in it.
- Legal checks: we do not name sexual offence victims, identify children in crime stories, describe suicide methods, publish communal incitement, or name suspects without making clear that they are accused.
- Duplicate check: if we already covered the event, the existing story is updated instead.
- Writing quality: plain language, named attribution and specific facts, checked against a published style guide.
Stories that fail are rewritten or dropped. A nightly editorial review re-reads a sample of the day’s stories against their sources and corrects anything wrong.
Bylines
Stories carry the byline “NIS Desk” (Nation in Shorts Desk) because they are produced by this process, not by a single reporter. Each story also names the editor who is responsible for reviewing the desk’s output and links to their profile. Every story lists its sources at the end so readers can check them.
Editorial standards
